I've never watched Star Trek so I can't say for sure, but are those episodes all considered Bottle episodes by the fans? As the whole concept behind doing them was to save budget on location or new sound stage shoots. Herstory of Dance, Pascal's Triangle Revisited, the Halloween episodes, and at least a dozen more - all bottle episodes as far as I can recall.īut a Star Trek "bottle episode" would use the bridge, the warp core, the hallways, the briefing room, sickbay, etc. The idea of a non-bottle episode is practically alien to any traditional three camera show filmed before a live studio audience. And a typical sitcom episode of a typical sitcom IS a bottle episode. So it actually strikes me as funny that Community both draws attention to itself doing a bottle episode by limiting that to one room but probably has over a dozen "bottle episodes" if you count episodes shot entirely on their sets and the surrounding backlot. Fawlty Towers only has a couple of location shots. Cheers sets entire episodes in 3 rooms of the bar. So far as I'm aware, "Bottle episodes" are a concept from STAR TREK where they'd confine action to the ship ("Ship in a Bottle") to cut back on expensive location shoots or special effects.īut, come to think of it, most sitcoms almost EXCLUSIVELY do "bottle episodes". It occurs to me that most sitcoms have maybe 6-12 sets and, outside of shows like Seinfeld or 30 Rock, don't do a lot of location shoots.
